Rural Health Communications

Provider: Delta Omega
Description: Effective public health communication starts with understanding the community you are trying to reach. In rural communities, factors such as transportation, broadband access, healthcare availability, population changes, and local resources can shape not only health outcomes, but also how people access and respond to health information. This presentation explores the unique considerations involved in communicating with rural populations and why strategies must reflect the needs and realities of individual communities.

Drawing on public health initiatives in rural Pennsylvania, presenters Alyce Palko, MPH, and Jeannine McMillan, MEd, will share real-world approaches to reaching communities through trusted messengers, community partnerships, local organizations, events, traditional and digital media, and targeted outreach. Participants will hear lessons from efforts ranging from community health education to the COVID-19 response, including how communicators adapted messages and used multiple channels to meet people where they were.

The session will also explore how public health professionals can move beyond one-way communication by working directly with community partners to develop outreach that reflects local priorities, preferences, and lived experiences. Participants will be introduced to a practical planning tool for creating tailored, community-centered outreach strategies and leave with approaches they can apply to strengthen communication and engagement in the communities they serve.
