Back to the listingFrom Leaf to Lab: Kratom-Related Deaths in an Evolving Alkaloid Landscape
Provider: NMS Labs
Description: Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a psychoactive botanical native to Southeast Asia, traditionally consumed as leaf, powder, or tea for stimulant effects at lower doses and sedative-like effects at higher doses. In the United States, it is commonly used for self-treatment of pain, mood disorders, and opioid withdrawal, and is frequently encountered in forensic toxicology casework. Its primary alkaloid, mitragynine, exhibits minimal opioid-receptor activity.
In contrast, the recent emergence of concentrated and chemically modified kratom alkaloid products, including 7-hydroxymitragynine and semi-synthetic derivatives such as mitragynine pseudoindoxyl, introduces compounds that function as high-potency, full μ-opioid receptor agonists. This talk will highlight kratom- and kratom-related fatalities and examine the toxicological and forensic implications of emerging high-potency kratom alkaloid products.
