Identifying Risk Factors to Manage Onset of Dementia

Provider: University of Memphis School of Public Health
Description: Dementia is a syndrome complex caused by various disorders that give rise to several neurocognitive problems in late life. Currently, there are no curative treatments for the cognitive and functional impairments of dementia. Moreover, management of dementia through the medical model has many restrictions, such as adverse effects of the drugs used, high cost of therapy, and currently limited efficacy (Bhattacharyya et al., 2021). Therefore, identifying risk factors and taking proper measures is important.

This module will review the common types of dementia and the current prevalence of dementia globally. Various dementia risk factors will be discussed including social determinants of health and social and behavioral risk factors, as well as differences between modifiable and non-modifiable dementia risk factors. The benefits of identifying dementia risk factors and possible counteracting measures that can be taken will be explored.
