TDH Foundations of Public Health 1113800

Provider: University of Memphis School of Public Health
Description: In this module, you will learn key historical events that have shaped the field of Public Health, which focuses on population-based methods of prevention. People working in Public Health value health equity for all individuals with the goal of maintaining optimal health, rather than restoring poor health. This goal is based on research and practice which consistently demonstrate that prevention not only saves lives and improves overall health outcomes, but also is cost-effective in saving the resources of individuals and communities.
Public Health emphasizes three main areas of prevention: 1) Primary Prevention: preventing disease from forming, 2) Secondary Prevention: early detection of disease, and 3) Tertiary Prevention: managing disease to reduce the spread/damage. Examples of primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention in population health will be described. The impacts of social determinants of health (SDOH), both human and material, will also be explored. Finally, we will acknowledge the vital competency of cultural humility for Public Health professionals working in any community-and especially communities whose members have been marginalized and disenfranchised.
